Employment as the doctors helping hand
Doctors with international university degree and eventual specialization, who does not yet have obtained Danish authorization, can be hired as the doctors helping hand. In this position, the doctor is equal with Danish medical students and this employment is paied. The head of the department have the responsibility to oversee the doctor’s work at the department. There are specific functions, which the doctor cannot fulfill during such an employment, such as prescribing medicine, fill out medical certificates, diagnose and treat people. A part from these specific tasks, the doctor can fulfill functions in accordance with their qualifications and competencies. The department where the doctor is employed is responsible of accessing the doctor’s qualifications and competencies.
Internships for doctors from EU/EØS and third world countries
Doctors from EU/EØS countries can be employed in time-fixed internships. It is a condition that the Danish authority for Patient Safety have approved the medical training which the doctor have received. Read more about the approval at www.steps.dk Therefore, the first step towards an internship is to obtain the approval. If the doctor does not have the education in the country where he/she is a citizen, a temporary authorization is granted, if a position has been offered. The temporary authorization is valid for no more than two years and cannot be extended.

The internship aims at clarifying whether or not the doctor in question is ready to have an evaluation position. The doctor holds an observing role at the department. During the internship, the doctor in question is working under supervision and the supervisor is responsible for the intern.
Internships are unpaid positions regardless if you are a doctor from an EU/EØS/Nordic country or a doctor from a third world country.
Evaluative positions
For a doctor from a third world country, the evaluative positions is required to obtain Danish authorization. The evaluative position is 6 months for specialists and after having completed the evaluative position, the doctor can seek the right to work independently as a specialist in Denmark. Evaluative positions are paid positions.
