Ongoing Projects

  • Research focusing on the discovery of circulating biomarkers for early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obesity and funded by grants from the Research Cube Aalborg UH, Novo Nordisk Foundation, and the Independent Research Fund Denmark. These projects are aimed at developing a pipeline for the discovery and validation of extracellular vesicle (EV)-based biomarkers for detection of tissue-specific diseases, while concurrently unravelling the impact of EVs in development of complications. These projects are led by Aase Handberg and Maiken Mellergaard. Moreover, studies to investigate the role of the immune system in developing obesity-related complications and the impact of metabolites delivered by EVs are in progress to develop the field of immunometabolic research at Aalborg UH. This project is led by Maiken Mellergaard and Aase Handberg.
  • Investigation of adipose tissue content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids and the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and mortality. This project is based on data from more than  57.000 middle-aged men and women enrolled into the Diet, Cancer and Health cohort. The project is led by Christian Bork.
  • Investigation of fatty acid levels in serum from participants in the North Denmark Region Pregnancy Cohort, which include all women in the North Denmark Region who had a single blood sample drawn in early pregnancy as part of prenatal screening for chromosomal anomalies. The project is led by Stine Krogh Venø.
  • Circulating biochemical biomarkers of peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system diseases. These projects aim to explore and develop biomarkers to detect, monitor, and prognosticate central and peripheral neurological diseases. The projects explore the biomarker capability of freely circulating neurological proteins as well as neurological proteins carried with extracellular vesicles. The projects are led by Claus Vinter Bødker Hviid.
