Projects

Here are some of our current large projects within advanced imaging and image analysis.

  • Brain imaging and neuromodulation
    A randomized sham-controlled trial with treatment of neuropathic pain in type-1 diabetes with direct current brain stimulation, including assessment of the brain response to neuromodulation using volumetric, functional and metabolic brain magnetic resonance imaging.

  • Advanced analyses of brain imaging in neuropathy and neuropathic pain:
    Based on detailed assessments from volumetric, resting-state functional and metabolic spectroscopy scans in type-1 diabetes patients, multiparametric classification models are used to identify brain features as biomarkers for different stages of diabetes, neuropathy and neuropathic pain. This can lead to improvements in early detection, monitoring of neuropathy and pain, and predicting treatment response in patients with neuropathic pain.  (PhD project)

  • Advanced pancreatic imaging:
    Magnetic imaging techniques are used to assess pancreas volume, fibrosis and inflammation (stiffness and water diffusion) and fat deposition in patients with chronic inflammation of the pancreas. This aims at improving the pathophysiological understanding of pancreatic diseases and identifying features that can be used as imaging biomarkers for early diagnosis and monitoring pancreatic diseases.

  • Advanced pancreas image analysis:
    Based on a large multi-center clinical database with computed tomography images of patients with chronic inflammation of the pancreas, artificial intelligence solutions are trained for automatic segmentation of the pancreas. This with allow extraction of pixel-to-pixel radiomic features in large cohorts of patients, followed by training of classification models to identify imaging biomarkers for different stages of the disease. This can lead to improvements in early detection, monitoring and predicting treatment response in patients with chronic inflammation of the pancreas.  (PhD project)

  • Other brain imaging studies:
    Current studies evaluate the brain response to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, investigate the brain in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc.

  • Other abdominal imaging studies:
    Current studies evaluate the function and motility of the stomach, small bowel and colon using advanced magnetic resonance imaging and image analyses in several clinical conditions. A current study uses magnetic imaging techniques to assess fibrosis and inflammation in patients with chronic kidney disease.
