Information for parents of a newborn when mother has diabetes (admission to the Neonatal Unit)

Welcome to Neonatal Units 12 and 13. With this booklet, we aim to provide you with information so that you will feel more prepared after your baby 's admission to the Neonatal Unit.

After birth, your baby will be seen by a paediatrician in the Maternity Ward before being transferred to the neonatal ward, accompanied by a midwife. If the mother has had a caesarean section, she must stay in Recovery for a few hours. In this case, the baby's other parent accompanies the baby to the NICU and may stay there with the baby until mum is ready to come.

We always work to separate mother and child as little as possible, so if the baby is doing well right after birth, the first 1-2 blood sugar measurements are taken in the Maternity Ward or in Recovery before the baby is moved to the Neonatal Unit.

The baby is admitted to the Neonatal Unit, whilst the mother is admitted to the Maternity Ward for the first 24 hours. This means that the maternity ward is responsible for the mother's care, however you as parents may spend as much time as possible with your baby in the Neonatal Unit. If the mother is later admitted to the Neonatal Unit, we strive to ensure that both parents have the opportunity to stay overnight. We expect one or both parents to be with the baby all the time. We offer food for one parent, but you are welcome to bring your own food, store it in the department’s fridge and eat together in the living room.
