Risk Factors for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip Before 3 Months of Age
We are thrilled to share our latest meta-analysis, which advances the understanding of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) – a condition with significant implications for early diagnosis and intervention.
Key Findings:
Family history and breech presentation were associated with a significant increase in the risk of sonography-verified DDH in infants younger than 3 months, and a DDH risk increase of female sex was found to be lower than previously reported.
A risk increase was detected for oligohydramnios, which has not been included in many screening programs and might also be considered as a referral criterion for hip ultrasonography.
What this means for screening:
Our study supports current guidelines prioritizing breech presentation and family history for hip ultrasound referrals. Notably, we propose oligohydramnios as an additional criterion, given its comparable risk profile.
This work represents a step forward in refining screening strategies and ensuring timely intervention for children at risk of DDH.
