Preoperative factors, such as sleep quality, are predictive for chronic postoperative pain

New Publication in British Journal of Pain

This study investigated the effect of sleep quality on preoperative pain, pain catastrophizing thoughts, depression, and anxiety in hip- and knee osteoarthritis patients. Moreover, these preoperative factors were then tested in a predictive model for chronic postoperative pain after hip- and knee surgery. The data suggest that patients with poor sleep quality report higher preoperative pain, pain catastrophizing thoughts, and a higher level of depression and anxiety, when compared to patients with good sleep quality. Preoperative pain, sleep quality, pain catastrophizing thoughts, anxiety, and depression were predictive for chronic postoperative pain.
