Kresten Rickers will defend the thesis entitled:

New interventions for lumbar disc herniation

Lumbar disc herniation is one of the most frequent spine disorders. It generally affects people aged 20-40 and often lead to long-term sick leave. Surgery is an effective treatment in the absence of symptom recovery after 6-12 weeks. It provides relief of pain and provides a faster return to work. Despite good results, there is a relatively high proportion who needs revision surgery, most often due to reherniation.

The thesis is based on three studies: 1) a biomechanical test of an experimental method for annulus fibrosus repair, 2) a clinical trial investigating a novel implant for use in conjunction with discectomy in lumbar disc herniation, 3) a systematic review with network meta-analysis comparing all contemporary surgical methods and conservative treatment for treating lumbar disc herniation.
