As a donor of breast milk, you must generally be fit and healthy. You must not:

• be sick and have a temperature
• be taking medication
• smoke
• drink alcohol.

In addition, the following guidelines apply to breast milk donors:

• You must be healthy and not suffer from chronic illness. If you become ill with an infection, you must temporarily stop donating.
• You must eat a healthy and varied diet. You are allowed to consume vitamins intended for breastfeeding women.
• You must not take medication or drugs. The staff has a list of the remedies which you are not allowed to take. However, you may occasionally take painkillers with paracetamol, e.g. Panodil® and Pamol®, use remedies for allergies, constipation, heartburn and acid reflux. You are also allowed to apply any eczema creams as long as you do not apply ointment to the nipples.
  You are allowed to be treated with thyroid hormone, insulin for type 1 diabetes and an inhaler for asthma.
• You must check with the donor milk centre before taking herbal remedies. Although herbal remedies are natural preparations, there can be both effects and side effects that must be considered when donating breast milk. Among other things, you should not consume fenugreek seeds, St. John's Wort and Ginko Biloba.
• You may drink fruit tea and other non-alcoholic beverages in normal quantities. Ask the donor milk centre if you drink a product that you think could be transferred to the milk.
• You must not donate breast milk if you have been vaccinated against MMR during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
• You are not allowed to dye and perm your hair or use artificial nails.

If you wish to donate your excess breast milk, you must answer the questionnaire and sign that you consent to donating your breast milk. You must be able to answer no to all questions in the questionnaire in order to be considered as a donor.

In addition, you must have a blood test for HIV 1+2 and hepatitis B+C.
